Reading: prices are 4.4% higher than in Sep 2025 but flat since May 2026, volume is up 2.0% year on year although it fell 7.1% from Aug 2026 in a single month, and the typical sold car is 3,113 miles younger than it was a year ago. These are advertised asking prices on listings that left US franchise and independent dealer websites, not transaction prices, and the MSRP row is a mean while the price and mileage rows are medians.
Why it matters
There is little retail headroom. A median that moved from $23,905 in May 2026 to $23,998 in Sep 2026 is a market holding its level, not one climbing. If buy fees or buyer premiums change at ACV, the gap has to be found somewhere other than the retail sticker, which puts it in dealer gross.
Demand is not the variable here. US dealer websites sold 1,588,723 used units in Sep 2026 against 1,557,527 in Sep 2025, up 2.0%. Median age of listings still unsold stood at 121 days, well past the 26-day time to sale, so some of the stock on the ground is carrying both age and a price above the recent sold median. Active counts can include the same car listed on more than one site.
Two wholesale data sets now sit with one owner. ACV's condition reports and arbitration history sit alongside Copart's salvage records (MarketCheck research). Whether those records are combined is a separate question from the fee question, and the story's claim that Copart is integrating ACV's digital marketplace into its remarketing platform is the one item in this story MarketCheck could not verify independently.
What to watch
