AI condition reports are in wholesale lanes; retail used units, starting with aged stock, are next
US used market, week of Nov 02, 2026

Standardized AI condition reports are already running in US wholesale lanes, and the retail used market they feed is the one MarketCheck measures. In the US, the median used vehicle that left a dealer website in Sep 2026 was advertised at $23,998, up 4.4% from $22,992 in Sep 2025, while the live lot on Nov 02, 2026 held 3,086,386 active used listings at a median of 120 days on market. The story behind this note, focus2move.com's "The next automotive data revolution: why vehicle condition will become as important as vehicle sales" (Oct 29, 2026), argues that AI inspection turns physical observations into storable, comparable data through standardized image capture and damage detection models. Four of the five claims we checked hold up against named publishers; the framing claim that condition becomes as important a data category as sales is the story's own and cannot be verified. What MarketCheck data can do is size the retail used market those condition reports are moving toward.
What the data shows
| Measure (US used, dealer websites) | Sep 2025 | Sep 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Used units sold (count) | 1,557,527 | 1,588,723 | +31,196 (+2.0%) |
| Median sold price (USD) | $22,992 | $23,998 | +$1,006 (+4.4%) |
| Median miles at sale (miles) | 62,294 | 59,181 | -3,113 (-5.0%) |
| Median days on market (days) | 24 | 26 | +2 days |
| Mean sold price vs MSRP (%) | -39.13% | -38.46% | +0.67 points |
Sales rose and prices firmed year on year, and cars left dealer websites with fewer miles but took two more days to do it, so a better spec did not mean a faster sale. These figures are advertised asking prices on vehicles that left franchise and independent dealer websites, a last-list sold proxy, and the discount to MSRP is a mean.
The live side of the market is larger and slower. On Nov 02, 2026 there were 3,086,386 active used listings on US dealer websites, with a median asking price of $24,143 and median mileage of 61,454. Median days on market for those live listings was 120, with a 90th percentile of 397. Of the live set, 303,742 listings (9.8%) carried no advertised price and 88,313 (2.9%) carried no mileage. The same car can appear on more than one site, and days on market here measures how long current listings have been up.
Why it matters
The spread is where condition does its work. Asking prices between the 25th and 75th percentiles run from $16,025 to $34,636, a span of $18,611. Within that band, a standardized condition grade is one of the few fields that separates one listing from another on the same year, model and mileage.
Aged stock is the obvious first use. Vehicles that sold in Sep 2026 had been listed for a median of 26 days, while the live lot sits at a median of 120 days and a 90th percentile of 397 days. Unverified condition is one of the questions that keeps the long tail unsold, and a report attached to the listing answers it before a shopper asks.
Incomplete listings are already common. Roughly one in ten live used listings, 303,742 of them, carries no advertised price. Earlier MarketCheck research found that AI shopping agents favor priced, fresh listings. Condition is the next field those agents are likely to look for.
Wholesale adoption is documented, not hypothetical. Self Inspection, a condition platform with AI damage detection, joined the National Auto Auction Association in Oct 2026, Auto Remarketing reported AI damage reports being built into a wholesale trading platform, and Cox Automotive described vAuto and UVeye bringing AI inspections to retail service lanes.
Lower miles are not a condition signal. The median sold used car showed 59,181 miles in Sep 2026, down from 62,294 a year earlier. MarketCheck research on Canada notes that Carfax Canada logged 393,200 accident-history vehicles in H1 2026, so history and condition still need checking unit by unit.
What to watch
- Whether AI condition grades start appearing on retail listings, and whether units past 90 days move differently once they carry one.
- Whether a shared grading standard emerges across auction platforms. Until one does, grades from different systems are not directly comparable.
- How the live-lot medians move from the Nov 02, 2026 reading of 120 days and $24,143, against the Sep 2026 sold median of $23,998.
- How many listings carry a price, mileage and history together, given the 303,742 live listings with no advertised price.
How this was measured
MarketCheck monthly sold-vehicle statistics from dealer websites (182 million sales since 2021) and live US listings. Sold prices are advertised asking prices on vehicles that left dealer websites, excluding auctions and private sales, and the data lags about two months. Medians are not mix-adjusted, the median price covers priced sales only, and the MSRP gap is mean-based. Wholesale and inspection claims are the named publishers'. Data read: MarketCheck sold-vehicle statistics and live inventory data, US used, dealer websites.
APIs used: MarketCheck Sold Summary API (the get_sold_summary tool in the MarketCheck MCP; docs Sold Summary tool) for the Sep 2025 and Sep 2026 sold figures, and the Inventory Search API, GET /v2/search/car/active (Inventory Search API docs) for the Nov 02, 2026 live listing counts and price, mileage and days-on-market statistics.
