Tesla's 52% US EV share is a rival retreat: dealer EV sales fell 56.5% in Aug 2026 vs Aug 2025
US EV market, read from sold and live listings at US dealer websites.

Insider Monkey reported on Sep 26, 2026 that Tesla's share of the US EV market rose to 52% through Aug 2026, up from 43% a year earlier, citing Motor Intelligence data reported by the Wall Street Journal. The story concerns the US market, and it also notes Tesla's own US sales fell 16% over that period while the overall US EV market contracted 30%. Looked at from the dealer side, the share move reads as a retreat by the brands that sell through dealers rather than growth at Tesla. MarketCheck sold-vehicle data shows new battery-electric sales at US franchise and independent dealer websites fell 56.5% in Aug 2026 against Aug 2025, from 72,237 units to 31,445.
What the data shows
| Measure | Aug 2025 | Sep 2025 | Oct 2025 | Aug 2026 | Aug 2026 vs Aug 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| New EV sales (units) | 72,237 | 71,713 | 27,975 | 31,445 | -56.5% |

| Median days on market (days) | 76 | 70 | 68 | 60 | -16 days |
Dealer EV sales held near 72,000 through Sep 2025 and then fell to 27,975 in Oct 2025, a level the market has not recovered from. The data records the break but not its cause.

Why it matters
The share shift is a retreat by legacy brands. Dealer EV sales fell 71.8% for Chevrolet, 78.5% for Ford and 79.4% for Honda between Aug 2025 and Aug 2026. A 16% Tesla decline becomes a share gain when the brands sold through dealers fall this far.
For dealers, EV stock is turning slowly. MarketCheck live inventory data counts 79,917 new EV listings on US dealer websites on Sep 28, 2026, with median days on market of 70. The slowest tenth has been listed for 330 days or more. That stock is roughly 2.5 times Aug 2026 dealer EV sales, and the same car can appear on more than one site.
For buyers, asking prices are lower. The median asking price of a new EV sold at a dealer fell from $55,561 in Aug 2025 to $49,469 in Aug 2026, down 11.0%. These are advertised asking prices, not a record of what changed hands.
The price drop is not coming from deeper discounts. The average discount to MSRP, a mean, narrowed from 6.39% to 3.80% over the same months. That points to cheaper models and lower sticker prices rather than dealer markdowns.
Dealer data cannot see Tesla. MarketCheck research notes that Tesla, which sells direct, does not appear in new-vehicle dealer captures. In MarketCheck's Jul 2026 EV sales data, Tesla ranked 30th with 6 dealer-site sales. Any EV share built from dealer data is a share of dealer sales only.
What to watch
- The monthly dealer EV sales count against the Aug 2026 level of 31,445 units. A second leg down would mean the Oct 2025 reset was not the floor.
- Aged EV stock. With the slowest tenth of listings at 330 days or more, those units are worth clearing before model-year changeover lowers their value further.
- The MSRP discount. If the average discount widens again from 3.80%, incentives are doing more of the work.
- Toyota and Hyundai volume. Their gains, +51.9% for Hyundai and 4,587 units for Toyota in Aug 2026, are the one growth signal in dealer EV data and show where showroom EV demand is moving while the legacy leaders pull back.
How this was measured
Sales are listings that left US franchise and independent dealer websites under sold-detection rules, not registrations. Prices are advertised asking prices. Auction, private and direct-to-consumer sales, including Tesla, are excluded. Year-on-year compares Aug 2026 with Aug 2025, and the percentage changes are simple differences of the figures shown.
