Record new-car loans rest on firmer prices and thinner discounts, not on rates

CBT News reported on Oct 05, 2026, citing Edmunds, that US new-car loan amounts and monthly payments reached record highs in Q3 2026 while the average APR held at 7%. Edmunds puts the average amount financed at $44,664 and the average monthly payment at $787, with a record 25.5% of financed new-vehicle purchases running 84 months or longer. The rate side of that record did not move. The price side did. MarketCheck data on US new vehicles detected as sold shows the median advertised asking price, a last-list sold proxy, at $44,764 in Aug 2026 against $43,603 in Aug 2025, up 2.7%, with the mean discount to MSRP at 3.22% against 3.49% a year earlier. Loans are larger because the amount left to finance is larger.

What the data shows

Month Median last-list price, sold proxy ($) Mean last-list price, sold proxy ($) Mean price vs MSRP (%) Median days on market (days) Sales (units)
Aug 2025 43,603 48,192 -3.49 46 1,313,683
Dec 2025 44,745 50,052 -4.15 54 1,260,003
Mar 2026 44,000 48,647 -4.05 46 1,314,064
Jun 2026 44,818 49,467 -3.19 43 1,251,033
Jul 2026 44,885 49,544 -3.33 46 1,236,183
Aug 2026 44,764 49,433 -3.22 44 1,290,216

Reading the table: from Aug 2025 to Aug 2026 the median price rose 2.7%, the discount narrowed by 0.27 points, the median days on market fell from 46 to 44, and sales fell 1.8%. The price columns are advertised asking prices on new vehicles detected as sold from US franchise and independent dealer websites, a last-list sold proxy rather than a transaction figure, and the MSRP column is a mean.

Why it matters

The loan now covers most of the sticker. Edmunds puts the Q3 2026 average amount financed at $44,664, about $4,770 below the $49,433 mean advertised price that MarketCheck data shows for new vehicles sold in Aug 2026. Both are averages, though of different populations and different periods, and read together they show buyers financing most of the typical advertised price.

Prices rose, so loans rose with them. The median advertised asking price on sold new vehicles went from $43,603 in Aug 2025 to $44,764 in Aug 2026, up 2.7%. With the average APR flat at 7.0%, a higher price feeds more or less directly into the monthly payment, which Edmunds records at a record $787.

Discounting is thinner than a year ago. New vehicles that sold were last listed at a mean 3.22% below MSRP in Aug 2026, against 3.49% in Aug 2025 and 4.15% in Dec 2025, the deepest discount of the months shown. Less money given back at the point of sale leaves more of the advertised price to be financed, and it does so without any change in rate.

Long terms meet softer late-model collateral. Edmunds reports loans of 84 months or longer at a record 25.5% of financed new-vehicle purchases in Q3 2026. MarketCheck research published in Sep 2026 shows the median last-list price of 2023 to 2025 model-year used cars fell from $31,998 in Sep 2025 to $30,834 in Aug 2026. Longer amortisation against collateral that is declining is the mechanism behind widening negative equity.

Stock on lots is priced above what is moving. MarketCheck live inventory data shows a median asking price of $48,783 for new vehicles on US dealer lots on Oct 12, 2026, a 75th percentile of $62,434, a median 51 days on market and a 90th percentile of 213 days. That is a different population from the sold figures above, and it is where any new incentive money would land.

What to watch

How this was measured

MarketCheck figures are advertised asking prices on new vehicles detected as sold from US franchise and independent dealer websites, with auctions and private sales excluded. They are last-list prices used as a sold proxy, not transaction prices, and sold data lags about two months, so Aug 2026 is the latest complete month. The discount is the mean last-list price against MarketCheck MSRP. Edmunds loan figures are quarterly averages.
