Record 99,199 UK BEV registrations in Sep 2026 meet a dealer lot that is just 7.0% electric
UK market read, week of Oct 05, 2026, on live dealer listings.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders reported on Oct 02, 2026 that UK new car registrations rose 12.1% in Sep 2026, the tenth consecutive month of growth and the strongest September since 2017, with battery electric vehicles setting a volume record at 99,199 registrations. That is the new side of the UK market. On the UK dealer lot, MarketCheck live inventory data shows electric at 7.0% of 572,874 active listings on Oct 05, 2026, new and used combined, with a median asking price of £23,602 against £15,215 for the whole lot and a median 36 days listed against 54 days. September's record new EVs become tomorrow's used stock, and they will land on a lot where electric is still the smallest of the four main fuel groups.
What the data shows
MarketCheck's UK listings could not be split into new and used for this piece, so every figure below covers the whole UK dealer lot, new and used together.
| Fuel type | Listings, Oct 05, 2026 | Share of UK lot (%) |
|---|---|---|
| Petrol | 298,634 | 52.1 |
| Diesel | 169,781 | 29.6 |
| Petrol Electric Hybrid | 63,368 | 11.1 |
| Electric | 39,979 | 7.0 |
| Diesel Electric Hybrid | 464 | 0.1 |
| All UK listings | 572,874 | 100 |
Petrol and diesel still make up more than four in five UK listings, and electric, at 39,979 listings or 7.0% of the lot, is the smallest of the four main fuel groups.
Why it matters
The new market is far more electric than the dealer lot. The SMMT's 99,199 BEVs out of 350,518 new cars in September (Morningstar, Alliance News) is about 28% of registrations. MarketCheck live inventory data puts electric at 7.0% of UK dealer listings on Oct 05, 2026.
Electric stock spends fewer days listed than the market. The median electric listing has been on sale 36 days, against 54 days for all UK listings. Days on market measure time listed, not time to sale, so this reads as current turn on the lot rather than a sold outcome.
Electric carries a higher ticket. The median electric asking price is £23,602, against £15,215 for the whole UK lot, about 55% higher. These are advertised asking prices, not transactions.
Electric supply is young. Model year 2026 cars make up 24.0% of UK electric listings and 2021 or older under 11%. MarketCheck research published Sep 17, 2026 found electric at 18.5% of used listings under one year old against 7.3% across all ages, which marks the young cohorts as the leading edge of EV supply.
BMW and Tesla lead EV supply. Each is 8.8% of UK electric listings, ahead of MG at 7.0% and Volkswagen at 6.9%. Dealers stocking these brands hold the deepest used-EV pools to price against.
Week to week, the picture is close to flat. Active listings moved from 564,412 on Sep 28, 2026 to 572,874 on Oct 05, 2026, while electric slipped from 40,134 to 39,979 and electric share from 7.1% to 7.0%. Median asking prices moved from £23,558 to £23,602 for electric and from £15,061 to £15,215 for the whole lot, within about one percent. Median days listed fell by one day for electric, from 37 to 36, and by two days for the whole lot, from 56 to 54. One week is too short a window to show a trend.
What to watch
The BEV share of monthly registrations, not only the count. MarketCheck research cites 29.8% for Aug 2026 (SMMT), and September's record volume came at about 28%. A record count is not a record share.
Electric days on market. If the 36-day median climbs toward the 54-day market median as young EVs flow in, that is the first signal that EV supply is running ahead of demand on UK lots.
September plate EVs against the used benchmark. MarketCheck research puts used Tesla Model Y at a £25,000 median asking price and 29 days on market, an anchor for the incoming cohort.
Petrol values. With petrol at 52.1% of UK listings, cheaper used EVs will compete first with the stock dealers hold most of.
How this was measured
Listings are active UK dealer-website listings on Oct 05, 2026, new and used combined. A car can appear on more than one site. Prices are asking prices, not transactions, and days on market measure time listed, not time to sale. The 28% BEV share is 99,199 divided by 350,518 from the SMMT figures. A new-car-only call returned no listings, which is why new and used are reported together.

The 12.1% rise, the tenth consecutive month of growth, the strongest September since 2017 and the record 99,199 BEV registrations all check out against Morningstar, Alliance News and the SMMT. The claim that electric adoption is accelerating on UK dealer lots is unverifiable on a one-week window of MarketCheck live inventory data.
