US-built sales slide in Canada, but Ford and GM stock is not the aged-inventory problem
Tariffs moved where vehicles are built. Canadian lot data shows they have not moved which brands are aging.

A Sep 22, 2026 report said US-built vehicles fell to 28.4% of Canadian new-vehicle sales in H1 2026, down from 35.4% a year earlier, citing J.D. Power Canada data, and attributed the shift to a tariff cycle that began in Apr 2025. The Canadian market is the subject here, and MarketCheck live inventory data from Canadian dealer websites lets us test what that sourcing shift looks like on the lot. On Sep 28, 2026 there were 388,247 active new listings in Canada, and Ford, Chevrolet and GMC each held a smaller share of 90-plus-day stock than of the lot overall. The brands carrying more aged stock than their lot share were Jeep and RAM. MarketCheck data tracks make, not plant of assembly, so it cannot split Ford or General Motors listings into US-built and non-US-built units. It tests the story's consequences for Detroit brands, not the 28.4% figure itself.
What the data shows
| Make | Active new listings, Sep 28, 2026 | Share of new lot (%) | Share of 90+ day stock (%) | Median days on market | Median asking price (CAD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| All makes | 388,247 | 100 | 100 (143,604 listings) | 69 | 55,919 |

| Chevrolet | 37,119 | 9.6 | 6.7 | 50 | 55,438 |

Reading it: Ford, Chevrolet and GMC each hold a smaller share of aged stock than of the whole lot, while Jeep's aged share is nearly double its lot share. Counts are listings, and one car can appear on more than one site. Prices are advertised asking prices in CAD.
Why it matters
The sourcing change is visible in sales data, not in Detroit brands' presence on Canadian lots. J.D. Power data cited by the story puts the US-built share at 28.4% in H1 2026 against 35.4% in H1 2025, while Ford remains the largest make on Canadian new-car lots with 50,945 active listings, or 13.1% of the lot. Chevrolet is second with 37,119 listings, or 9.6%.
Age of stock points away from the two automakers the story names. Chevrolet's new stock carries a median of 50 days on market and GMC's 62 days, against 69 days for all makes. Ford sits at 72 days, close to the market median. None of those readings describe stranded inventory.
The aged-stock concentration sits with two Stellantis brands. Jeep is 4.5% of the new lot but 8.5% of stock listed 90 days or more. RAM is 5.7% of the lot and 7.4% of aged stock. Across all makes, 143,604 listings have been live 90 days or longer.
Price level, not age, is where tariff cost would bite hardest for the Detroit brands. Ford's median new asking price is C$69,751 and GMC's is C$75,379, against a market median of C$55,919. Chevrolet's median asking price is C$55,438, close to the market. Any further tariff cost would land on some of the most expensive stock in the market.
The lot was steady over the eleven days before this read. All-makes active new listings went from 386,641 on Sep 17, 2026 to 388,247 on Sep 28, 2026, a change of +1,606. Ford moved -255 to 50,945, RAM +193 to 22,094 and Jeep -341 to 17,378. All-makes median days on market held at 69, and the all-makes median asking price moved from C$56,025 to C$55,919, a change of -106.
What to watch
- The US 50% tariff on Canadian vehicles and steel, effective Jan 01, 2027 as reported by Reuters. Automakers with Canadian plants face the mirror image of this story.
- Ford's share of 90-plus-day stock. A climb above its 13.1% lot share would point to heavier incentive activity on its higher-priced stock.
- Jeep and RAM aged inventory, while their aged share runs well above their lot share.
- Chevrolet's median days on market, currently below the market's. A rise toward 69 days would bring it in line with the market median.
How this was measured
Method: active new listings on Canadian dealer websites. Days on market is how long current listings have been listed, not days to sell. Prices are asking prices in CAD. Make shares are listing shares, not sales or registration shares, and do not reflect plant of assembly. The read used four inventory search calls plus a make breakdown: a facet call on make for all new Canadian listings, the same facet call filtered to listings active 90 days or more, a stats call on days on market and price for all makes, and the same stats call for Ford, Chevrolet and GMC.

"US-Canada Tariff War Reroutes Auto Production, Damages US Sales in Canada", eletric-vehicles.com, Sep 22, 2026. Fact-check tally: 4 verified, 1 unverifiable. Verified: the 28.4% H1 2026 US-built share, the 35.4% H1 2025 share, the Apr 2025 start of the tariff cycle, and the shift in sourcing away from US plants. Unverifiable: the claim that Ford and GM are being damaged in Canada, where the story is the only source and MarketCheck data shows Chevrolet and GMC stock younger than the market median and Ford near it.
