AI checkout for cars is early: 10.4% of used cars sold in Aug 2026 had no price an agent could quote

A report published Oct 04, 2026 by gfmreview.com puts agentic commerce, where an AI agent completes the purchase, at about 3% of checkout transactions, despite preparation by Checkout.com, Mastercard, OpenAI and Stripe. Read against the US market, MarketCheck sold-vehicle data says the retail automotive side of that question starts earlier than protocol choice: 10.4% of used cars that sold on US dealer websites in Aug 2026 carried no advertised price an agent could quote. Of 1,709,132 used vehicles that left US dealer websites in Aug 2026, 1,532,031 carried an advertised asking price, about 89.6%. The unpriced remainder is invisible to any agent that shortlists by price, whichever checkout standard wins.

What the data shows

Measure (unit) Used, Aug 2025 Used, Aug 2026 New, Aug 2025 New, Aug 2026
Vehicles sold (count) 1,738,262 1,709,132 1,313,683 1,290,216
Sold with an advertised price (count) 1,524,295 1,532,031 1,288,047 1,261,537
Priced share of sales (%) 87.7% 89.6% 98.0% 97.8%
Median last-list price, sold proxy ($) $22,998 $23,988 $43,603 $44,764
Median days on market (days) 25 26 46 44
Mean days on market (days) 46.4 45.8 75.5 70.6
Mean price vs MarketCheck MSRP (%) -38.56% -38.20% -3.49% -3.22%

Read: sales fell in both segments year on year while median last-list prices rose (used 4.3%, new 2.7%), and the priced share of used sales rose from 87.7% to 89.6%. Every price figure in the table is an advertised asking price captured as the listing left the site, a last-list sold proxy. Medians cover priced sales only, and the comparison against MarketCheck MSRP is a mean.

A second cut shows where that priced inventory sits. Of 6,365,355 active US dealer-website listings on Oct 12, 2026, 4,891,159 were at franchise dealers and 1,473,838 at independents, a 76.8% to 23.2% split. Roughly three in four cars an agent could shortlist today sit on franchise dealer websites, so protocol adoption reads as a network decision across groups rather than a single-store one. Listing counts are a live snapshot, not sales, and the same car can appear on more than one site.

Why it matters

What to watch

How this was measured

Sales are listings that left US franchise and independent dealer websites, priced at advertised asking prices, excluding auctions and private sales; medians cover priced sales only; listing counts are a live snapshot, not sales, and can include the same car on several sites. Percent shares and changes are simple ratios of the figures shown. Sold-vehicle statistics come from the MarketCheck Sold Summary API (the get_sold_summary tool in the MarketCheck MCP; docs https://docs.marketcheck.com/docs/get-started/api/mcp/tools/sold-summary), run for Aug 2026 and the matching Aug 2025 window; sold data lags about two months, so Aug 2026 is the latest complete month. The dealer-type split comes from the Inventory Search API, GET /v2/search/car/active (https://docs.marketcheck.com/docs/api/cars/inventory/inventory-search), run Oct 12, 2026. The story we checked

"Agentic Commerce at Checkout: The 3% Problem and Protocol Wars", gfmreview.com, Oct 04, 2026. Fact-check tally: 4 verified, 1 unverifiable. Verified: Checkout.com adopted the OpenAI-backed Agentic Commerce Protocol in Nov 2025; Mastercard is building to a separate agentic commerce standard; OpenAI moved toward merchant-controlled checkout in Apr 2026; US used-car dealer-website sales are not expanding year on year (1,738,262 in Aug 2025 against 1,709,132 in Aug 2026). Unverifiable: the claim that only about 3% of transactions involve AI agents at checkout, which the story alone reports.
